Hey ya'll...If you get a chance check this link out.
I was on Sparknotes...yes Sparknotes, don't judge...and saw a link to an article about a new Hispanic Disney princess, Sophia. Thought someone might be interested. This page has a bunch of articles so read away and tell me what you think!
Hope this is of some interest to someone -- at least it's pertinent to recent class discussion...
Hispanic Disney Princess
First off, I always go on Sparknotes :)
ReplyDeleteAlso, I found a link (http://www.voxxi.com/disney-princess-sofia-not-latina/) that explains that Princess Sofia of Nick Jr. is not a Spanish princess. A representative explained, “What’s important to know is that Sofia is a fairytale girl who lives in a fairytale world. All our characters come from fantasy lands that may reflect elements of various cultures and ethnicities but none are meant to specifically represent those real world cultures."
As if these characters don't give children messages about race, class, and gender. Although Princess Sophia (and her family) is voiced by Spanish actors, the representatives made it clear that she was not Spanish, but also that they were in the early development stage for a project with a Spanish heroine.
At least they are eventually going to have one... but of course that could have been a comment to appease the controversy.
